SponsorUsOn 11th April 2010 I, James Ross, Ex Irish Guard, will be participating in a Half Marathon in Blackpool to raise money for the Irish Guards Singers.

The choir undertake a lot of charitable work and functions for organisations and events not just in the North West but around the country taking their music to all walks of life.  This unrelenting work puts great strain on the purse strings, hence the Blackpool Marathon.

We are aiming to raise £2k allowing the Irish Guard Singers to create a new CD which in turn will raise further monies for charities and the soldiers of the Irish Guards who are currently serving and served in Afghanistan

The choir was formed 27 years ago and consists of 36 singers all lead by  John Hyland, 76, who assumes the role of Chairman of the Choir, tirelessly working behind the scenes to raise money through CD sales and function bookings, both civilian and regimental.  He works closely with every charity, including Elderly Persons Homes, taking the choir to entertain the people in their own surroundings at no cost to the home, they rely solely on donations and previous CD sales.

This will be a new “concept” for the Irish Guards, their first Jazz Swing CD!  They have previously released, with great success, three CD’s, “Favourite Hymns of the Irish Guard” ; “A Century of Micks” and ‘The Ukulele Boys’.

Also donating their time and efforts to this cause are the following:

Michael McArdle - Singer & Composer will be supporting John Hyland / Carmel Rourke as well as recording at least two tracks with the Choir.  For those that are not familiar with Michael’s work, he has previously performed at the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, Menphis and Nashville, and has recently returned from Australia where he performed in front of Government dignitaries which included The Prime Minister and the Governor General.

This new CD will have the voice of their first female singer Carmel Rourke, a new addition to the choir, who conducts the choir as well as singing, previously trained as a Soprano she lends herself well to the male voices. Also there will be a guest appearance by Christine Wren who has been singing Jazz on a professional basis for 20 years ensuring that this new venture for the Choir will be to the best possible standard.

Also donating their time and talent are The Dukes of Jazz a five piece band from all parts of the UK, who work on a regular basis with Michael McArdle.

This will all be put together by Tony Doyle a professional sound engineer, again donating his time and experienced to a very good cause.

It is our hope to raise £2,000, this will cover the cost of production and packaging of the CD’s and serve as a base for funds to be raised through sales of the CD.

The Irish Guards Singers will be promoting there new CD / songs in the Adelphi Hotel on 15th May 2010 in Liverpool in front of the Lord Lieutenant, Lord Mayor of Liverpool and Senior Officers of the Irish Guards Regiment.
